Not long ago, I was exactly where you might be right now.
Sitting at my screen, probably late at night, searching for a way out.
On paper, I had a good career. But behind the scenes, I was exhausted, burnt out, and quietly wondering how long I could keep living that way.
That search is what led me into the world of online income, and eventually affiliate marketing.
At first, I was hopeful. The idea of building income online without needing my own product, a huge audience, or years of experience sounded like exactly what I’d been looking for.
So I did what most beginners do. I started reading, researching, watching videos, comparing different strategies. Trying to work out what path actually made sense.
And honestly, it felt more confusing than clear.
Everyone seemed to have a different opinion. Different business models they thought were the best. Different methods. Different promises.
Some people said affiliate marketing was the best place to start. Others said it was too competitive.
Others pushed entirely different online models, like dropshipping, Youtube, or coaching.
Looking back now (after building a real income through affiliate marketing) I can see the real problem wasn’t that affiliate marketing didn’t work.
It was that I was being shown everything in the wrong order.
Because the biggest mistake most beginners make is not choosing the “wrong” business model.
It’s jumping too quickly into a model, a product, or a big plan before they’ve learned how to test whether real people in that market actually want what they’re trying to build around.
That’s why so many beginners pour months into content, websites, funnels, or offers - before they’ve got the one thing they actually need: proof that real people are interested.
So in this guide, I want to help you understand affiliate marketing properly, what makes it appealing, where people go wrong, and how to get started in a way that let's you validate faster, waste less time, and build with more confidence.
Because affiliate marketing can absolutely be part of the path.
But the real win is learning how to start in the right order.
Let’s dive in.
From Burnout To Breakthrough
(Why I Left a 7-Figure Business to Build an Online Income That Fit My Life)

Hi, I’m Mel Robinson, this is my husband Bernie (and our furry best friend, Lucky :)
Our journey into online business wasn’t about chasing internet riches.
It was about realising that true success looks very different to what we’d always been taught.
Not too long ago, I was living what looked like the “perfect” success story.
I’d co-built a seven-figure mortgage broking business from the ground up and, from the outside, it probably looked like I had it all. A thriving business, a great income, and a great team.
But behind closed doors, I was falling apart.
After years of stress and long hours in a rapidly growing business, I found myself battling severe burnout.
I would lie awake night after night, and I started having panic attacks during routine client meetings.
I may have achieved some of the traditional markers of success, but at what cost?
I’m originally from Minnesota, my husband is from Brazil, and we live in Australia - so we were constantly missing precious moments back home as our parents got older and our nieces and nephews grew up.
Even when I did make it home for visits, I was never fully present. I was checking emails, thinking about work, and worrying about something back in the business.
During the pandemic, when I finally had some time to stop and think, I had a realisation:
Success means very little if you don’t have your health or the time to enjoy your life.
We wanted something different.
A life where we could travel more, take more beach walks with Lucky, and spend more quality time with the people we love.
A life where we had more ownership over not just our income, but our time too.
After exploring different options, we realised an online business had the potential to give us the time, location, and financial freedom we were craving.
But like most beginners, we had a lot of doubts.
We thought we might need technical skills, a big audience, or to be constantly posting on social media just to make it work.
What changed everything for us was learning a much smarter way to start.
Not by building something huge straight away, but by learning how to test ideas, get real feedback, and build from there.
So we took the leap.
We invested in ourselves, put in the work, and learned how to build online in a way that made far more sense than what we’d seen before - starting small, learning what worked, and building from real feedback (instead of blind hope).
Over the last 3 years since, I’ve built a multi six-figure affiliate business - but the biggest lesson wasn’t just that affiliate marketing can work.
It was that starting in the right order changes everything.
Looking back now, it was one of the best decisions we ever made. And if I have one regret, it’s that we didn’t start sooner.
If you’re feeling stuck in the same stress cycle I was, I’d love to help you explore a different way forward.
That’s why I’m sharing a beginner-friendly training that shows the framework to a much smarter way to start online - so you can stop guessing, test ideas earlier, and build with more clarity from the beginning.
Because affiliate marketing can absolutely be part of the path.
But the bigger win is learning how to start in the right order.
So What is Affiliate Marketing Anyway?

Okay, first the basics.
Affiliate marketing is where you promote other people’s products or services online and earn a commission when someone buys or signs up through your referral link.
It’s a performance-based model, which means you only get paid when the action actually happens.
At a simple level, it works like this:
- You sign up as an affiliate for a product or service
- You receive a unique tracking link
- You promote that product through content, emails, videos, articles, ads, or other marketing channels
- If someone clicks your link and takes action, you earn a commission
That’s the basic model.
And one reason affiliate marketing appeals to so many beginners is that you don’t need to create your own product from scratch to get started.
But this is also where a lot of people misunderstand it.
Because affiliate marketing can be a great business model - but the model itself is not usually the first thing that makes or breaks your success.
What matters most in the beginning is whether you’re learning how to match the right problem, the right audience, and the right message.
Affiliate marketers tend to do best when they create genuinely useful content, solve real problems, and build trust with the people they want to help.
That’s why I’ve always believed in only recommending products I genuinely rate and would feel good about someone buying through my link.
What Are You Getting Yourself Into? The Pros (and the Cons)
I don’t know about you, but I like to know the full story before I make a decision - the good, the bad, and the honest.
Let’s start with the pros.
1. It can become highly leveraged over time
One of the biggest appeals of affiliate marketing is that the work you do can become more leveraged than a traditional business where you are constantly trading time for money.
That doesn’t mean it’s passive from day one.
But once you find an angle that resonates, create useful content, and build trust, the assets you create can keep working for you long after you hit publish.
2. You don’t need to be an expert first
Affiliate marketing can be a beginner-friendly model because you don’t need to invent a product, hold stock, or arrive with years of experience.
You do still need to learn how online marketing works.
But you do not need to be a tech genius, have a huge social media following, or be posting all day just to get started.
3. It can give you more flexibility
One of the reasons affiliate marketing appealed to me so much is that it can create a path toward more flexibility.
You can choose the niche you want to work in, the products you want to recommend, and the type of content you want to build around.
That flexibility is a big part of what makes it attractive for people who want more free time, more ownership, and less dependence on one income source.
So what about the cons?
1. Yes, there is competition
Affiliate marketing is popular, which means you will not be the only person promoting products in your space.
But competition is not usually the real problem.
The bigger issue is that many beginners enter crowded spaces with generic messaging, weak positioning, and no real validation - then assume the model itself is broken when nothing converts.
2. It still takes effort, learning, and testing
Affiliate marketing may have a lower barrier to entry than many businesses, but it is not effortless.
There is still a learning curve, especially when it comes to choosing what to focus on, creating content that connects, and understanding what your audience actually responds to.
And this is where many beginners go wrong.
They put weeks or months into content, websites, funnels, or offers before they have enough proof that the audience, problem, and message are a real fit.
That’s why the right training and framework matter so much: it helps you test earlier, focus on the right things, and avoid wasting months building in the wrong order.
3. You are building on other people’s platforms and programs
As an affiliate marketer, part of your income depends on the products, companies, and platforms you work with.
Commission structures can change, offers can disappear, policies can shift.
That’s why, over time, it’s smart to diversify and think bigger than just one product or one program.
Affiliate marketing can absolutely be part of a life-changing online business - but only if you approach it in the right order, with realistic expectations, and a willingness to validate what actually works before going all in.
High-Ticket Affiliate Marketing (Why It Appeals To So Many People)
There are thousands of companies that offer affiliate programs.
You’ve probably heard of brands like Amazon, Target, Adidas, or Walmart - and those programs can be a fine place to understand how affiliate marketing works.
But one thing many beginners quickly realise is that with lower-ticket products, the commissions are often quite small.
When commissions are small, it can take a lot more traffic, a lot more sales, and a lot more volume to build meaningful income.
That’s one of the reasons high-ticket affiliate marketing gets so much attention.
With the right high-ticket programs, commissions can range from hundreds to even thousands of dollars per sale.
In my own business, my highest one-off affiliate commission has been around $4,000, so yes, the appeal is real.
You may not need huge volumes of sales to generate solid income.
But this is also where a lot of beginners get it wrong.
They focus on the commission size first, instead of asking whether the audience, problem, and offer are actually a strong fit.
Because high-ticket offers usually need more trust, more clarity, and a stronger message to convert well.
It’s not just about promoting something expensive.
It’s about promoting something genuinely relevant to the right person, in the right way.
So while high-ticket affiliate marketing can absolutely be powerful, the bigger lesson is this:
The best offer is not always the one with the biggest payout.
It’s the one that fits the audience and solves a problem they already care about.
That’s where real traction starts.
The Smartest Way to Get Started Today

Maybe you’re like I was - waking up every day feeling trapped by pressure, anxiety, and the constant weight of work.
If that’s where you are right now, I get it.
When I started looking into affiliate marketing in 2023, I wasn’t looking for a side hobby or a bit of extra spending money.
I was looking for a real way out.
A way to build something that could eventually give me more time, more flexibility, and a life that didn’t feel like it was costing me my health and relationships.
But here’s the truth most beginners only realise after they’ve already wasted a lot of time:
It’s not enough to just decide you want to do affiliate marketing.
You also need to start in the right order.
Because this is where so many people go wrong...
- They pick a model too quickly.
- They choose a product too early.
- They start building content, websites, funnels, or offers
All before they’ve really learned how to test what fits, what gets a response, and what has real potential.
So instead of getting traction, they get stuck.
Not because they’re uncapable, or because affiliate marketing "doesn’t work".
But because they were shown the wrong things first.
That’s why I believe the smartest way to get started is with a clear framework.
Not more random YouTube videos, not more conflicting advice, and not more guesswork.
A real starting point that helps you understand how online businesses actually make money, what to focus on first, and how to avoid wasting months building the wrong thing.
